I advertised it as abandoned in the paper, scheduled an auction and bought it myself for $1.00. In my case it was an out of state vehicle, truly abandoned by someone from SC who would not respond. you may not want to go back to the same clerks that you have already told about the situation. ![]() You might try running it by the DMV just to be sure. It worked for me on a 1965 Pontiac Tempest back in the day. Admittedly it is a little convoluted, but it works. I could not find a car-specific procedure, but I believe it is essentially the same. Below I have attached the procedure used to obtain title for an abandoned vessel (boat). Jeff, there is a way to do it by treating it as an abandoned vehicle. If old owner died or is unwilling, a bill of sale as proof of ownership with proper application fille, not so easy, 6 weeks to 3 months you will get a title But come on, I can't be the only person to have ever been in this position and there has to be some way to remedy this! Any ideas?the previous owner can apply foo a duplicate through DMV by filling out a form. I have been to DMV numerous times and they are no help at all and basically tell me I'm screwed. But come on, I can't be the only person to have ever been in this position and there has to be some way to remedy this! Any ideas? Well, to make a long story short he won't return my calls now that I actually want a title and I now believe he never got one from the person he bought it from in the first place based on a carfax report I did from the last known record. The kid I bought it from said he would try and find it and if he couldn't be would come down to DMV and file a lost title form. Maybe it's just my love for these cars, but I would now like to do a cheap resto on it and just drive it. The problem now is now that I have the car (paid $200 for it) I am realizing that it is actually very solid and am having a hard time letting it just get cut up. I know it's stupid to buy a car without a title and normally I would never, but the car in question (an '83 320i) was originally going to be just stripped for parts and then cut up, so a title wasn't really a big deal.
